Description
ABSTRACT Mobility and functional dependence worsen over time for stroke survivors and opportunities for further rehabilitation also diminish. Following stroke the majority of survivors return to living in the community and half will have residual motor deficits at one year following their stroke. This narrative review was undertaken to investigate the effectiveness of rehabilitation on gait performance, social participation and quality of life for this group. Results showed that both home-based and outpatient physiotherapy caused improvements in gait speed but benefits may not be clinically significant and are difficult to maintain. Inconsistent improvements in quality of life and social participation were found overall, suggesting the need for research into alternative treatment strategies to improve these outcomes.
